Barbara Mayfield, President and Founder of Noteworthy Creations
|
Barbara Mayfield, MS, RD, is the creator of www.funwithfood.com and the Kid's Club Nutrition Education curriculum and accompanying resources. She is also founder and president of Noteworthy Creations, Inc.
Barb has been teaching young children for over 30 years, beginning as a teenager when she ran a playschool for preschool-age children in her family's backyard in Ithaca, NY. Her educational background includes a BS from Purdue University where she studied dietetics and communications, and an MS from Cornell University, where she studied nutrition education. As a registered dietitian her work and volunteer experiences have focused on nutrition education for young children. She worked in the WIC (Women, Infants & Children) program for twenty years as a nutritionist, a local program coordinator, and as a nutrition educator. She has also consulted for Head Start and volunteered extensively in schools and community programs. A trademark feature of her educational programs and resources is the use of music to teach nutrition. Her first nutrition songs for children were written in 1985 to promote National Nutrition Month for her local dietetic association. In 1988 she received the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award from the American Dietetic Association. Her colleagues have given her the nickname "The Singing Dietitian," not for her singing ability, but for her unique approach to teaching nutrition.
The Kid's Club program originated in her local Indiana WIC program as a popular children's class. In 1990, Kid's Club received the Nutrition Services Award for Creative Nutrition Education from the Indiana State WIC Program. A United States Department of Agriculture grant in 1992 partially funded the development of Kid's Club into a program that could be used in WIC programs across the country as well as other programs which provide nutrition education to young children. In 1992, Barb founded Noteworthy Creations, Inc. to continue the development and distribution of nutrition education resources. Resources are described in more detail on the "Products" page. In addition to writing lesson materials and teaching children, Barb enjoys training other nutritionists and educators across the country in providing effective nutrition education programs. More information about Noteworthy Training opportunities is available here. Barb also serves on the Foods and Nutrition faculty of Purdue University, teaching Nutrition Communications.
Barb lives in Delphi, Indiana. She and her husband Joe have raised three children: Jenny, is married and living in Indianapolis, working as a pharmaceutical chemist. Joey is a management major at Purdue University. Christopher is in high school. In her spare time, Barb enjoys reading, traveling, and hosting get-togethers with family and friends.
